Something You Can Do

Let’s face it. Life is busy and making healthy choices isn’t always convenient. Trying to figure out what’s best for everyone can be overwhelming.

At Driscoll’s, we’re all about the things we can do. Instead of trying to overhaul everything all at once, we’ve found that making simple changes can have a profound effect on overall health and well-being.

If you’re new to organics or looking for ways to enhance your organic lifestyle, we’ve come up with a number of simple suggestions that you can incorporate as they suit you.

Celebrate the Fathers in Your Life

The Father’s Day idea came to Sonora Smart Dodd during a Mother’s Day sermon in 1910, which extolled maternal sacrifices made for children. Mrs. Dodd realized that in her own family it had been her father who had sacrificed – raising her and her five brothers alone, following the early death of his wife. She believed it was just as important to honor the unsung feats of fathers, and we’ve been celebrating ever since.

  • If that special man likes gadgets and tools perhaps a battery-powered lawn mower, solar watch or set of green golf balls will be to his liking.
  • Plan in advance. Take dad for a walk in nature, or around his favorite neighborhood, and bring your camera. Take pictures of your day together. Surprise him on Father’s Day with a photo album or scrapbook featuring photos from your day.
  • If dad has gotten interested in organics, or if you’d like him to, consider getting him an organic wine or beer club membership at www.organicwinepress.com.
  • Dads like to be pampered too. Surprise him with a breakfast-in-bed of fresh organic blueberry pancakes and a cup of Fair Trade coffee (visit www.groundsforchange.com for sources of fair trade and organic coffee).

Go Green

There’s a lot of talk these days about “going green.” Most of us want to do better for the environment, but it’s hard to know where to start. The good news is that going green doesn’t have to be difficult or inconvenient.

  • Save energy. Replace your light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Use a “smart” power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts phantom or vampire energy use. Wash clothes in cold water and when the weather’s good, hang clothes to dry on a clothesline instead of using the dryer.
  • Save water and money. Take shorter showers and install low-flow shower heads. Plant drought-tolerant native plants in your garden.
  • Make your own non-toxic cleaning products. Visit www.eartheasy.com/live to learn how.

Make Graduation Special

Graduation is a special time for many individuals marking the completion of one chapter in life and the start of another. It’s also a time to receive recognition for success and achievements in school. Here's how to make a memorable graduation experience you’ll cherish for many years.

Enjoy the Beginning of Summer!

You probably don’t need to be given suggestions about enjoying summer, but just in case you find yourself lacking inspiration and are looking for ways to get summer off to a good start…

  • Take a class! Not the sit inside kind of class, but one that gets you outside trying a new activity, like surfing, landscape painting or mountain biking.
  • Get your feet wet by planning a weekend getaway in nature. Visit http://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm to find a national park near you.
  • Nothing says summer more than the barbecue. Fire up your grill and cook outdoors.
  • Relax! Spend a day lazing around in a hammock or lying on a blanket in the grass. Pack a picnic and sit by the ocean or a lake. Enjoy the fresh air and sunshine!
